PHIL NORMANMIDAS & applications developer

PROFESSIONAL STUFF

How did you arrive at Ensign? What path brought you here?

I did a Chemical Engineering degree at Bath University where I found out that I had no practical skills but was good at abstract thought. During my Sandwich Course placement at British Gas I discovered computers and was hooked.

After my degree I did a post graduate course in Operational Research and Computer Techniques and became a programmer.

I worked in statistical programming, life cycle modelling and actuarial simulation before joining Telxon developing middleware applications to link hand held devices to host systems for many of their blue-chip Customers.

When they were taken over by Symbol I went self-employed for a couple of years supporting existing applications. Ten years ago I was employed as a contractor for Ensign to develop a bespoke application to run their business.

What are you known for professionally? What do you have a knack for?

I am a .NET developer and have been since the beginning of .NET in 2000. I have the knack for seeing how small details make up the big picture. I think in patterns and see reuse everywhere.

What are you most passionate about professionally? What most excites you about your work & the contribution you can make?

I enjoy keeping up with the continual changes and improvements to the development process. I like to see how my work makes life easier for those around me.

In the evenings I play in bridge tournaments both face to face and on-line. I play regular badminton and am a member of a walking group. This year I’ve walked Hadrian’s wall and the Yorkshire 3 peaks.

Bridge. I’ve done it for 30 years and I’m just getting the hang of it!
